York Trades Union Council call on the people of York to show they love their local libraries on National Libraries Day this February 9th.
If every York resident makes the most of their 20 item allowance on the 9th, this would send a clear message to those within the council who are attempting to privatise this essential service.
Libraries are one of the few non-commercial spaces left in our community and provide free education and entertainment for everyone. This could be destroyed by the same profit driven forces which are currently tearing apart the National Health Service.
York Trades Union Council, UNISON, York Stop the Cuts and York Socialist Students will join together to hold a celebration of the library in Library Square (outside York Explore Library, Museum Street) from 11am-2pm. We will encourage people to explore and understand the threat to this vital service. Or in the words of Children’s Laureate Julia Donaldson:
“Everyone is welcome to walk through the door. It really doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor. Yes, come to the library! Browse and borrow, And help make sure it’ll still be here tomorrow.”
